Conceived as a private waterfront sanctuary within a densely developed urban setting, this contemporary residence explores the relationship between architecture, nature, and the surrounding landscape. The primary design challenge was to maximize the potential of a constrained waterfront property while creating a sense of privacy, openness, and tranquility. With neighboring residences in close proximity and minimal setbacks, the architecture required a carefully considered balance between expansive living spaces, natural light, and visual separation.
The resulting design transforms these limitations into an opportunity to create an intimate, resort-inspired retreat, where thoughtfully composed architectural forms, natural materials, and carefully integrated water features establish a sense of calm and refinement.
A Layered Arrival Experience
The experience begins with a dramatic entry bridge, offering a carefully orchestrated transition from the surrounding urban environment into the privacy of the residence. Beneath the bridge, a sunken Japanese-inspired courtyard creates a secluded garden sanctuary, complete with a cascading waterfall, tranquil reflecting pond, and intimate outdoor seating.
This unexpected landscape element introduces the soothing presence of water immediately upon arrival, establishing a connection to nature that continues throughout the home. The interplay of water, stone, vegetation, and architecture creates a meditative environment, providing a quiet counterpoint to the dramatic waterfront setting beyond.
Architecture Defined by Light and Privacy
Natural light was a central consideration in the development of the home’s architectural composition. An infinity-edge pool forms a striking architectural centerpiece, visually merging with the water beyond while bringing the movement and reflection of water directly into the living environment. Multiple outdoor gathering areas offer distinct experiences, from intimate seating spaces to expansive terraces designed for larger celebrations.
A separate entertaining pavilion, positioned closer to the waterfront, provides a covered indoor-outdoor kitchen and dining environment. Designed to accommodate gatherings of family and friends, the pavilion extends the home’s hospitality spaces into the landscape, offering an immersive connection to the water and convenient access to the private dock.
The composition of terraces, water features, and landscaped outdoor rooms establishes a continuous relationship between the residence and its remarkable waterfront setting.
