Set in a quiet, tree-lined neighborhood of North Vancouver, Hendry Compound is a carefully composed modern residence shaped by restraint, connection, and a deep response to place. Created across two adjacent properties divided by a public laneway, the project brings together a three-level main residence and a separate guest and pool house within one unified architectural language.
The exterior expression of Hendry Compound is shaped by a close reading of its North Vancouver setting, where soft light, mature greenery, and an understated residential character inform an approach that is calm, grounded, and deliberately restrained. From the street, the compound presents a composed and respectful presence, with clean-lined massing, pale brickwork, and dark coated-steel cladding allowing the home to sit comfortably within its quiet surroundings. The residence is designed to belong to its neighborhood while opening inward to a private world of terraces, courtyards, and outdoor rooms, balancing privacy with carefully considered moments of transparency. Natural material tones, shifting shadow, texture, and changing daylight give the exterior a settled and refined character.
Set across two adjacent properties divided by a public laneway, the project transforms a split site condition into the organizing framework for the design. The two structures are conceived as distinct yet closely connected parts of one larger living environment, allowing the home to feel expansive, layered, and naturally integrated across both lots. Spaces are arranged to frame light, extend views, and connect interior rooms with terraces and outdoor living areas. Guided by calm, clarity, and purpose, Hendry Compound creates a secluded residential retreat that feels generous, intimate, and deeply rooted in place.
The main residence unfolds in a linear fashion across three levels. Open-plan living spaces occupy the ground floor, creating a clear connection to exterior terraces and outdoor rooms. Bedrooms are located above, allowing the upper level to feel private and settled, while a guest suite is placed in the basement to provide flexibility.
Across the laneway, the guest and pool house is conceived as an extension of the home’s social life. Its open-plan living space opens directly to the pool terrace and sunken lounge, creating an easy transition between enclosed comfort and open-air entertaining. A gym and spa are discreetly separated for privacy, while a quiet office occupies the upper level.
Indoor and outdoor living are carefully aligned throughout Hendry Compound. Large areas of glazing frame views, bring in natural light, and extend the experience of the home beyond the building envelope. The pool house is designed for entertaining, with broad openings that allow the living area, terrace, pool, and lounge to operate as one continuous environment. Terraces, courtyards, and outdoor rooms are positioned as natural extensions of the interior spaces, creating a sense of ease and continuity across the compound. The home supports a relaxed West Coast lifestyle, where the boundaries between architecture, exterior living, and daily routine feel fluid.
The exterior is defined by traditional materials reinterpreted in a contemporary manner. Pale brickwork, dark coated-steel cladding, glass, concrete, warm wood, and custom metal detailing create a refined architectural language rooted in the tones of the North Shore and the Pacific Northwest.
Brick, often associated with weight and solidity, is balanced with expanses of glazing, slender detailing, and dark metal cladding. The coated steel shifts subtly with changing light, reading almost black from some angles and warmer brown from others. This tonal variation gives the architecture depth and movement while maintaining a calm, composed presence.
The project’s richness comes through layering rather than ornament. Proportion, texture, shadow, and light carry the architectural character. Each material transition is carefully resolved, allowing the home to feel durable, tactile, and refined without excess.
Hendry Compound reflects a holistic approach to custom residential design, where architecture, interiors, and exterior living are developed as a single composed whole. The project transforms two fairly typical city lots into a sprawling West Coast-style residential retreat, balancing family life, hospitality, wellness, and privacy within one cohesive vision.
