“This 350-square-foot bedroom was wholly transformed from an unused basement. It is now a warm and luxurious bedroom that combines a study area, a library and a sitting area. The extensive use of stained maple woodwork provides warmth in the design and expresses the architecture of the rest of the homes. Custom designed furnishings, mixed with classic pieces, provide a thoroughly modern atmosphere for its resident. Of particular note is an elaborate circular 11/2-story bookcase that provides a separate room setting, created by enclosing an exterior window well and adding a skylight. This design also increases daylight into the interior. A large sculptural chandelier hangs from the bookcase’s circular vault, further reinforcing the shape and feel of the entire room.
This design recently won the Bedroom category in the Washington State Chapter of ASID’s Northwest Design Awards for its problem solving, creativity, quality of design and beauty of the space. The elaborate circular bookcase was created by enclosing an exterior window well and adding a skylight, increasing daylight in the interior. A large sculptural chandelier hangs from the bookcase’s circular vault, further reinforcing the shape and feel of the entire room. Compiled and written by Victoria Hyla
